Price: Rs 175 (Outside India: US $5.95)
The Book:
This is Chicken Neck’s first book in a series about the peoples of the North East India for children. The colourful illustrations bring alive Naga culture with its vibrancy and celebration of diversity.
The text covers various aspects of Naga culture, history and geography. The book is designed so that the child absorbs the information with the aid of puzzles and activities.
This book has been received with enthusiasm not only by the Nagas but also by children (and adults) from all over India and abroad.
However, much to our dismay we had left out some Naga tribes inadvertently in the process of making the word puzzles.
In order to avoid any unnecessary controversy we are bringing out a second edition: it will out within the next ten days!
Foreword of the Book:
Although this book was originally written for Naga children it has been received with enthusiasm by children (and adults) from all over India and abroad.
However, much to our dismay we had left out some Naga tribes inadvertently in the process of making the word puzzles and included some who do not entirely identify themselves with the Nagas.
There is still no authentic list or names of Naga tribes and in order to avoid any controversy we have listed those mentioned in the Anthropological Survey of India’s People of India series edited by K.S. Singh and the Naga tribes recognized after the publication of that series.
In order not to cause any unnecessary controversy and to let our Readers continue to enjoy the book we have withdrawn the first edition and are bringing out this new edition.
Just the exercise of making a list of the Naga tribes in India has brought home to us the issues relating to the politics of naming. This is the issue we have dealt with in much more depth in the companion volume to this book: ABC of Naga Culture and Civilization.
The Author:
Nandita Haksar is a human rights lawyer. She is an author of several books.
